Followup: Passed NJ smog test Posted by JerseySaab [Email] ![]() ![]() |
This is a followup to the earlier post regarding my '86 900S failing emissions check. Today I tried again. Short story: success. The long story:
I carefully cleaned the AMM wire with some carb cleaner and set the adjustment to the starting point of 380 ohms. However I found that I could not get anything meaningful out of the diagnostic connector. Closest I could get was a constant 12V between the green wire and ground. I adjusted the AMM through its entire range but the voltmeter did not budge. (Connecting between the green and red/grey wire yielded about -1.5 volts which did not change with the AMM setting.) No idea what's going on there, so punted and come up with a "Plan B."
The AMM was reset back to 380 ohms to start and this time I hooked up a digital voltmeter to the O2 sensor, keeping the sensor in circuit. Then the AMM was adjusted until the voltmeter displayed a good range of voltage changes from the O2 sensor. This actually required adjusting the AMM screw clockwise, which is higher resistance and richer mixture. I wound up with about 580 ohms on the AMM with the O2 sensor responding well, at least as far as I could tell on the digital voltmeter.
Then I took the car out for a high-speed 65-70 mph run for about 45 minutes to get everything good and warmed up. Ran it through inspection again and this time it passed. After leaving though I realized they had not given me the emissions printout so I don't know what the final numbers are, whether the car barely passed or was good by a wide margin as in past years. Not that it really matters for now since the sticker is good until December 2017.
I have not driven this car much in recent years, in fact I can't even remember the last time it was taken out on the interstate. The poor thing looks terrible with rust, bad paint, sunroof sealed off with duct tape, mold growing on the trim, and has about 300,000 miles on the clock. With all that it still drives practically like a new car. Still tight and even without a turbo the 16V engine is very responsive, doesn't miss a beat.
