Where are you located? $1000 for an automatic 900 without reverse might be a bit optimistic?
As for whether you'd get another year or two out of it, unless you also suspect a head gasket on its way out (btw, is it the original head gasket on that engine?), why not give it a shot?
You could figure your budget for the car that'd replace your 900 (say, a 2-year lease on brand X), and put something like 2/3rds of that into your 900.
Also, if you do choose to send the car to the junkyard, and if the interior is in good shape (particularly the dash pad and driver's seat), consider finding a local Saab driver who'd make good use of those parts. The interiors are easy to pull out, btw.
I don't imagine that you'd get much (if any) less from the yard, since they price it on the metal, and once the car hits the yard the interiors tend to get thrown aside.
