Been trying to make sure my Saab stays cool, noticed at the last smog check that the passenger-side fan had been disconnected. Reconnected it and kept blowing the fan fuse. Followed the troubleshooting tips in the Bentley guide led me to think two things: that the passenger side fan was shorting out (kept blowing the fuse), and the relay was bad (the main fan wasn't coming on either). Unplugged the passenger side fan and jumpered the relay for the week.

Put in the new relay today and reinsulated the connectors on the passenger side fan, started her up, seemed to be going fine: got a little warm, and the driver-side fan kicked on. Turned on the AC etc., didn't seem to change anything. A few minutes later I think it tried to kick on both fans and blew the fuse. Yanked the leads to the passenger fan again and replaced the fuse and the driver's side fan seemed to cycle properly at that point.

Now the problem is there's no fan running when I turn off the ignition (have to leave it in the electrics-on position to keep the driver's side fan running).

The Bentley book says the passenger fan only comes on when the AC is on or the compressor is cycling. I never turn on the AC (it's essentially inop), but my experiences lead me to think that it is also the fan that's supposed to stay on when the car's off. Is that right?

So I suspect it's not the relay, the thermoswitch, or the connector, and that the fan is going bad. It reads as 2 ohms across the leads. Does that sound right?

How ought I to go about replacing it?

How important is it to keep the main fan running after driving in the meantime?

And, what should I look for to find the mating connector for the half-moon coupler to the fan electrics? The old one has completely rotted away.

Thanks for your help.
