My understanding of this is that 9 times out of 10 you get a CEL, your car is trying to tell you there is something wrong with the O2 sensor. Unfortunately, if it's been there a while, and especially if you live in the saltbelt, changing out the O2 sensor is one of the worst tasks imaginable (for something so seemingly easy). Search this bb, there are lots of good stories!
To save you some pain, and just in case it's just a bad connection, try unplugging the connector, clean with contact fluid, and then reconnect. See if that helps. Intermittent things in electronics are often bad connections somewhere.
