I had this issue on a Rambler for a while (Motorola alternator). Chased it around and around in circles through the charging system for weeks, but could never find the problem!!
In the end, the alternator (+) stud had a loose connection to the battery cable. I tightened it up and everything was fine. You might just want to check!
Yes, the ground wire is the thickish black wire connecting the alternator to the alternator bracket mount bolt that holds it to the block. Bad ground at the alternator shouldn't cause the battery light to glow. Ask me how I know!!! I once drove my 900 around with a disconnected ground wire until the car stalled, with no way of knowing because the light never illuminated. It never even illuminated when the engine was off, but the key was on. You HAVE to have a ground at the alternator for the light to light up, because the field coils for the alternator are energized through the light bulb. They are grounded the same way as everything else. That said, our alternator grounds are wimpy. I always upgrade them on all my cars. Maybe a really resistive ground at the alternator could cause a glowing battery light? Seems unlikely to happen though you never know.
