I took apart a lot of AL124X alternators a while back while trying to save money by not buying a reman'd one, but it was a few years ago so my memory might be a bit fuzzy.
Nevertheless:
The spline you talk about - is it kind of like Woodruff key? I have seen AL124X alternators with a square key-like thing notched into the shaft. Some have the slot for the key, but don't have the key. Some don't even have the slot. Even recent rebuilds only sometimes have the key. As far as I know, the pulley and fan don't need the key to keep from rotating on the shaft - the pressure from the nut is enough. This sometimes creates problems when removing the pulley, but never in everyday use - even though the shaft is not tapered.
I've never seen an alternator fan with a square notch. They're all rounded, as far as I know. I have no idea why there is a notch in the fan at all. Usually the fan is installed by removing the key and sliding it down the shaft, then replacing the key to install the pulley. As far as I know, the fan and washer sit where there is no key. They are fine, they never have problems turning on the shaft because they are clamped down so hard by the nut.
The stack order of alternator parts, so far as I can remember, is:
-Fan
-Washer
-Pulley
-Wavy washer
-Nut
I hope I have remembered everything correctly, and I hope this helps!
