1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
In reference to a post I made not long ago, I have this conundrum:
1) do I have the correct Lobro (outer) CV joints,
2) how easy/much time for mechanic to knock off old CV joints to see if my new Lobros fit (= are the axles aftermarket)?
3) how obvious will it be if the axles don't accept OEM CVs?
4) is it easy enough then to put the old CV joints back on?
Explanation:
1) I bought a pair of new (but according to the boxes, laying around the shelves for 20 years) Lobro/GKN CV joints (eb, $145). Here's the ad:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Saab-900-S-Turbo-2-0L-1987-1988-1989-Lobro-Outer-CV-Joints-QTY-2-89-90-574-/281999710360?fits=Make%3ASaab%7CModel%3A900&hash=item41a87e1898%3Ag%3A8ogAAOSwsN9XADVX&vxp=mtr&nma=true&si=b06hm50UKbfL30GO60E5al5eS5Y%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
(the photo is the actual varmints rec'd) The box says part number C 152 12 01 86 020 and 89 90 574 BUT the part itself says "C152120186025" (the last number 5 not zero). I'd've thought that'd be the simplest thing to check on the web, bit no luck. Do I have the same parts as the box? The Mfg dates, by the way, are 1993 & 1994.
2, 3, 4) Since the 'word' is that the only full axles available nowadays are such krap (or gamble on same) I didn't buy any, but did see that OEM CVs are getting harder to find, spotted these on eb, so jumped in case.
I also bought a pair of new Lobro/GKN boots from FCP (a favorite shop).
So my instructions for mechanics will be:
a) pull axles, do the hand test for tightness,
b) unless they feel 100% great, knock the existing joints off, attempt to replace with new. I've heard that (some? all?) aftermarket axles aren't compatible with OEM joints...
c) if the new CV joints fit, great, proceed...
d) if they don't, clean the hell out of the existing ones, grease, & put the old ones back on with new boot (of course).
e) if the old ones are fairly shot and the new ones don't fit - well then I'm a little screwed, could either order krap Chinese axles and wait and pay $$$ for shipping or have them reassemble the best they can...
The facts again [or cf: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/900/index.html?bID=451122 ]:
I have a 1989 900s
I live in Alaska, meaning to get anything here is slow and super expensive (and nothing's in stock).
I don't have the wherewithall to do the job myself, so have to farm out to the local shop (primarily US cars).
Boots (both) torn for a few months.
I drive ~120 miles a week, no big sounds yet (just hand-packed in a bunch of grease today through the cracks in case...).
It's a simple job of course, so hoping for mechanic's intellect to be able to follow best path depending on situation (have had good enough luck with shop in past on other jobs).
