Odd clutch slave behavior... or maybe not. Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] (#32) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Justin VanAbrahams) on Tue, 16 May 2017 16:46:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Back in 2011 I replaced the clutch & clutch slave on my '85 SPG with parts from a parts car. The point of the replacement was just the clutch slave, but I went ahead and kept the '90+ flywheel/disc/pressure plate/slave all together.
The details are foggy, but I remember having to take it back apart again immediately after finishing the work - I'm thinking I'd neglected to put thread sealant on the flywheel bolts and pulled the whole thing apart... some little detail like that.
The whole thing had been together, bled and working before it came apart again. When I assembled the second time, I had no action from the clutch slave despite not having opened the hydraulics a second time. I reverse bled the slave back into functionality. I thought at the time maybe the slave was in poor shape... but that was six years ago.
Yesterday, I replaced the flywheel in the SPG with a lightened one, and upon reassembly I found I could not engage the slave to the point I could remove the pressure plate spacer tool. My immediate thought was there was a problem with the flywheel - maybe too much had been taken off the surface and now it was too far from the throwout bearing. I took the whole thing apart again to measure... new flywheel is within 1mm of old, clearly not the problem.
That's what I remembered my issue with this particular slave cylinder, it's almost the same series of events... functioning slave removed, reinstalled, no longer functioning.
I remember there is/was a special tool to keep the slave collapsed during these operations, and while I don't have that tool I always keep the slave collapsed with zip ties - it's not coming apart and it's not leaking.
I'm pretty sure that when I put it back together AGAIN and bleed the slave it'll come back to life, but I just can fathom why this particular slave cylinder is cursed in this new and exciting way. Anyone have any ideas?
