Follow-up here on the final solution.
Turns out I cut the shock piston too low - should have cut it above the washer and above this piece (which is the top cover of the shock). So I used a hacksaw blade to cut the piston shaft again and this allowed pulling the top of the piston and mounting hardware out.
Not an elegant solution and a bit of a slow cutting process (took about 30 minutes of hack sawing and resting), but it worked!
On the installation of the new shock, I was able to use a magnetic pick up tool to get the socket on the top mounting nut....along with some swivels, extensions and a flashlight.
I will try the top nuts removal method on the PS front shock IF I can find a good way to effectively hold the piston shaft from twisting
