I use a 900 as a daily driver and have for the past 21 years. I plan to continue to do this for at least another 10 years.
However it helps that I have more than one. They are old cars and it's not unusual for something to break that keeps you from driving the car. (As opposed to thing that break and you keep driving anyway.)
Automatics have a worse reputation than they deserve. I have several in the fleet because my wife can't drive stick. I prefer automatics when I am in stop and go traffic or I have a lot of traffic lights. The downside of the auto is that they rev higher on the freeway because they don't have overdrive. And the other downside is that they are more likely to fail in a way that makes the car undrivable.
I highly recommend you get an 1988 or newer because of much more reliable front brake caliper.
A huge benefit to a classic that you have to drive to appreciate is how good the sight lines outside of the car are.
