If you don't drain the block some coolant dribbles into the cylinders when the head separates. Personally I don't like that. If the HG allowed any exhaust gas to escape into the coolant it needs to be dumped. Exhaust gas turns coolant corrosive. Corrosive coolant damages the HG .I have a large pan from Home Depot. I like it for messy auto trans pan removal and for messy coolant draining. The pan is shallow brown and is larger than the typical oil drain pan. I'm fuzzy on this but it seems it was less than $10.
