Well, 1100 is close enough to 1 kOhm. It should be OK but there's no downside to replacing it. Something is wrong somewhere in your secondary ignition system and that includes the coil, spark plug leads, plugs, cap and rotor. What brand/number plugs and leads are you using? Using resistor plugs might be an issue. Why does your '88 turbo not have vacuum advance? Should be LH 2.2 which uses a VA can on turbo cars.
Ignition timing should be 16 degrees advanced at 850 RPM (+ or - 50 RPM) and plug gap is 0.024" to 0.028" (that's inches). Only use NGK plugs for best performance (BCP6ES). If you had vacuum advance then the hose to the vacuum advance must be disconnected and plugged (at the manifold so there's no vacuum leak and no advance occurring) while adjusting the timing.
