The degrading wire insulation problem started in 1985 models as far as I know. Two 85’s I’ve owned had the issue. The latest being my current 85 SPG which I had to completely re-wire the engine harness and all of the wiring in the doors. My engine harness decided to melt down when the car was sitting in my driveway.(not in the garage thank god!) The car could have easily caught fire as all of the harness and shrink wrap completely melted down into a giant disgusting mass. Got in the car to go somewhere and it reeked of electrical smoke!
It’s a tedious job to re-wire but by no means impossible. I had very good luck finding most all of the correct wire gauges and wire colors from Rhode Island Wire. Be very meticulous and double and triple check every connection and you’re back in business! At the same time I also replaced most of the crumbling plastic connectors with weatherpack wiring connectors which are super nice.
