Based on what you've included in your description I'd suggest that you start by inspecting the inner drivers and tripod assemblies.
The source could be any number of things but
when you have little to go on it's best to start with the easy stuff and you can evaluate those by just unclamping the boot and probing with a finger in the lovely moly grease. Raise the wheel, hold the inner driver still and twist the axle to see if there is unusual play. Even when new there is a very small amount of free movement but if you find lots or can pull the axle shaft off center more than a tiny amount then you've found the problem.
As a transmission rebuilder I would offer this too: Badly worn pinion bearings will allow the pinion shaft to shift off center and it shifts one way while driving and the opposite while coasting. Sometimes the coasting evidence is the most noticeable. So how many miles are on your transmission and has it ever been run without sufficient oil?
Most failed driveline components (CV's, inner drivers, wheel bearings, etc.) have a fairly specific presentation or symptom(s) so more investigating and test driving, as you said, is in order and should help narrow down the culprit. Let us know what you find.
