Re: the grounds - especially the ground wire from the alternator to the block. That wire often breaks and is hard to detect that it is broken. And you probably won't be able to measure a bad ground with your meter.
Bad brushes are also a possibility. However, my experience is changing the brushes with the alternator on the car is a total pain. I pop of the alternator off with its bracket and then doing the brushes is easy.
