First third and fifth are all gears that pull on the rubber coupling while second fourth and reverse all push on the coupling. Of course if the coupling is split that would mostly be a problem for gears that pull on it (1,3 and 5).
I almost always work on and examine the coupling from above leaning over the passenger side fender. It's above the rack and can be seen with a flashlight and the 13 mm pinchbolt that must be loosened to adjust the linkage can be attacked with a small ratchet and short socket by cramming your arm way down there (I don't get under cars any more unless there's no alternative). If you need to drive out the tapered pin THAT is best done from below.
Have someone shift the car through its gears while you watch the rubber coupling. If it's split you'll see it spread apart slightly when certain gears are attempted. A 1986 car should have a cylindrical type coupling which aren't available new. If it is split contact me, I probably have a good used one.
