Steering shaft lower u-joint replacement Posted by Eric in VT [Email] (#3547) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Eric in VT) on Fri, 14 Jun 2024 16:33:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Does anyone here know how to remove/replace a u-joint in the steering shaft?
I don't know about other areas but here in VT the lower u-joint always goes bad but the upper one does not. It makes sense that the joint that's exposed to the weather down at the steering rack eventually goes bad while the one that's high and dry up close to the steering wheel stays good. After trying a string of used shafts (new ones no longer available) I now have 3 shafts with bad lower joints.
As far as I can tell by looking and measuring, while the splined connectors on the ends are different sizes, the actual u-joints are the same. It would be great if I could take out the bad lower u-joint and replace it with a good upper u-joint. The u-joints seems to be held together with some sort of inner clip system but I can't figure out how to remove it.
I'd be happy for any advice on how to remove these joints or a lead on a source for a whole new shaft or any other ideas. Thanks in advance.
