I have a no-start issue with my 1988 Saab 900 SPG that I'm hoping the hive mind here can help diagnose.
Background:
I replaced the fuel pumps due to finding both of them dead. I drove it down to the car cleaning station vaccumed it out, drove it back and parked it in my condo lot. It stormed *very* heavily the next day. The next evening, it cranked but wouldn't start. When I tried to start it, the engine would crank normally but not start. I checked for fuel pressure at my valve test port on the fuel rail and there was none. I jumped the fuel pump at the fuse box in the engine compartment and the pump ran and the fuel rail pressurized. With the fuel rail pressurized, the car started but ran very badly and stalled out after about 15 seconds. I checked the fuel pressure with the pump jumped to hazards and it was about 35PSI on my pressure instrument. Oddly enough it seems to run better with the IAC valve disconnected, but still dies.
Here's what I've checked/replaced so far:
- Fuel pump - I powered at the pump connector and it was within spec and new so I assumed the pump was good.
- Spark plugs. I pulled the spark plugs and they were fouled with fuel as well as old so I replaced them.
- Fuel injectors - I measured resistance at the injectors and it was within spec so I assume they are good. Also checked with noid light.
- Fuel pressure regulator - I have not checked this yet but plan to. Is there a way to test it without removing it from the car, maybe with a vacuum source?
- IAC Valve. Old one just buzzed and didn't move. Bought a presumed good one from Ebay. Car ran fine until yesterday, have not tested the Ebay one yet.
With all of the above done, the car still cranks but does not start. I'm at a loss as to what to check next. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!
