I've owned a number of Saabs, a 99, many 900s, and a 9k (currently 1987 9kT and 1985 90016vT). I've also owned a 320i and a 523i.I love my Saabs dearly. In fact, I love them more than I loved my BMs. But this does not stop me from recognising good engineering, and BMWs are very well put together. On the whole, I found them to be marginally easier to work on than my Saabs.
Transmission removal is not too bad, as long as you raise the car enough to get good space to work in. Did it on my 320 to change the clutch. Transmission removal is a lot easier on a BM than on a 900, since the engine can stay in place. Basically, you put the car on stands, remove the prop shaft, undolt the tran, and pull it out. Some of the bolts are difficult to get to, and the heavy transmission is difficult to maneuver(sp?), but you can easily do it in a day. I'm sure a skilled mechanic could do it in less than 3 hrs.
The driving experience is very different. Better in some ways (more fun with rwd), but not as good in others (major oversteer in wet).
If it's as good as you say, I'd jump at it. Change the tranny, and enjoy!
