Weight balance and traction

According to a factory brochure I got in the 1980s, the engine/transmission combination is perched atop the drive wheels in such a way as to center the weight of this combination over the wheels under full throttle acceleration. With a more typical layout and the engine reversed from this (drive shaft out the back) you'd have the transmission behind the engine, thus behind the drive wheels. This would shift the weight distribution aft and make for poorer traction under acceleration. I don't know why they didn't go with a transverse mount; perhaps this was easier or allowed them to put in a bigger engine.
That's the only excuse I've ever heard. As Todd has suggested, it certainly wasn't done for maintainability or easier access to engine components!
