The driver's side on my '89 gets wet when I park it with the front end either level or on an upward incline. The gasket around the door has a fold and the water rides down the fold and gets into the cabin (and down into the carpet) through the door weatherseal channel section that clips over the body seam around the door opening. We've had some *torrential* rains around here recently and, if I park the car with the front facing downwards, the carpet stays dry.
Of course, this isn't the *only* reason that front carpets get wet. There are also several firewall penetrations that cables, etc. go through, as well as the wndshield gasket that can also let water in.
