John, if your gauge reads full when you fill it and only oscillates a little when the tank is near empty, then I don't really see the problem. I think your sender unit is functioning normally, and that oscillation is just from the gas sloshing around in the tank when the car moves. I think cleaning those contacts on the sender was all you needed to do.
