pre 89 pinion bearings were too small to start with. Bearings can fail early due to improper preload (inspite of careful installation), overload by power increase, or poor lubrication.
You want good bearing life, but you also want to shift with some ease, and a reg 80-90 in the cold is not shifting friendly.
I also recomend 75-90 GL5 synthetic, for cars with increased power and/or driven hard. I tried Redline's product like this, 75-90NS, and it shifts poorly. I am currently running (easy) a week on 20W SA compressor oil (non-detergent). Shifting is much better with this. Then I'm trying NEO 75-90HD, a synth GL5 that is said to shift almost as well as MTL in rx7's. Amsoil makes great stuff, no experience with their gear oils.
Regarding oil visc'y, the specifications have tolerance ranges, but in general, at the 212F rating, motor oil and theoretical gear oil equals:
x-20 = 78
x-30 = 82
x-40 = 88
x-50 = 95
Note Saab recomended 10-30, or 75W, (and 10-40 in some cases), for all classics, and MTL is said to measure at a high 80W, so it would meet this hot visc spec easily. It also includes extreme pressure additives and passes the GL4 differential test for gears, which motor oils usually can't pass, and the ep is good for overworked bearings too. MTL is a good choice for most. For very hot places (Fla, Tex, Ariz) mabe use a blend with 1 QT of their MT-90, or just use the best shifting 75-90.
Even a synth 75-90 can be quite thick, and not shift the best. I'll post performance of the NEO.
