Auto Tranny fluid Replacement- how often?

Hi,
Just bought '89 900 a few months back from guy who works at my local Saab dealership. It's a auto transmission non turbo and is in awesome shape and I'd like to keep it that way.
The previous owner recommended that whenever I have my oil changed I should bring in a couple bottles of transmission fluid for the mechanic to replace. He said that since the transmission drain is near the oil drain plug, that it would be very easy to just drain the trans. fluid and refill it whenever I have my oil changed. Also, he said that it does not matter what type of AT fluid as long as it meets the standard in the manual. Type F or something like that.
I took it for an oil change a week ago at a local independent Saab mechanic and they told me that the AT fluid looks great and there is no need to refill it. They said it should only be done every year or so. And if I did want it done, they would want $70 to do it. They also said that they use redline or some special AT fluid for Saabs and standard tranny fluids you buy at local auto parts stores are not recommended.
My question is who is right? Is it that difficult to just drain the AT fluid and refill? If so, why would they want $70 to do it? Also, do I need a special AT fluid or just any kind that works with my Saab? Since my car is in great shape and the tranny is in good condition, I tend to believe the guy who I bought my car from. Any recommendations or comments are much appreciated. thanks
-sorry for the long post
