If they are noticably dimmer than before, I'd check the ground (negative wire) for the headlights, and the main collection of grounds located just below the battery on the longitudinal "frame" member. I've had two cases where repairing/tightening these wires improved not only lighting but general electrical function all over the car.
Higher wattage will burn hotter and cook your connectors and possibly distort the housing, How much were/are the light housings? Or didn't you get that far yet?
