I have only had to try this once, but it worked. My friend's '85 900 had deformed injector spray patterns and was running poorly. First, figure out how to pressurize the fuel system by running the fuel pump. To do this I used a jumper wire between the two appropriate terminals in the fuse box. A good manual will tell you which ones. Next step was to put the maximum amount of fuel through the injectors. To do this, pull the injectors if they are not already out of the intake manifold. Next, remove the air ducting at the top of the fuel distributor and with the fuel pump running (previous step) carefull lift the air flow sensor to its maximum travel. This will put send the maximum amout of fuel possible through the injectors with the intention of cleaning out the carbon and other deposits. On my engine, it took about 8 ounces of fuel to clean out the injectors and restore the conical shaped spray pattern. Be sure to use a container to catch the fuel coming out of the injectors, don't try it on a hot engine and generally watch out for fire hazards associated with spilled fuel.
