I agree with most of what is said here. I have an '88 8valve. I like the '88 for the brakes(>88 vented Girlings) and I don't really mind that it looks different than <'87's cosmetically, i.e. lights, wheels, etc....
Make no illusions that the 8 valve has at best 110hp. Its not hopelessly gutless, you just find yourself in the higher RPM's more often. I truely believe that this motor loves the higher RPM's. I own the auto, it makes matters worse regarding the gutless issue.
As a daily driver I think it works.
