I used a shortcut which resulted in proper shifting in my '88 SPG. The Townsend Imports page on adjusting the shifter gave me the hints I needed to find this method.:
(Assuming you have the car jacked up with properly-located jackstands.)
Remove the interior parts Haynes & Bentley indicate.
Shift into 3rd.
Put the properly sized drill bit in the adjustment hole per H & B. You may need to move the shift lever around in order to engage the drill bit in the hole.
Loosen the pinch bolt on the shift linkage. If your car has been in the Northeast for any wintry length of time (there are other places - those who live ther know), you'll need to use something like PB Blaster to penetrate the rust.
Pull the transmission end of the shift linkage all the way to the rear to fully engage 3rd gear.
Tighten pinch bolt.
You are adjusted.
All the tool that's pictured in the manuals does is make sure that 3rd is fully engaged. This is especially helpful if, for some reason, the shifter is *completely* disrupted and you can't find 3rd.
