original spg has plastic strips & grease between the Al channel & body (either for spacing or rust consider. or both). Since the panel uppers don't really seal too well & water runs behind the panels & runs off, I siliconed the hole circs to make sure no water gets in there.
I also went ahead & undercoated the body just behind the panels just for the heck of it, but I was rustfree - I think if there's already some rust, undercoating over it may just accelerate the rot.
I also sealed one of the panel top & side gaps to the door with black silicone (running masking tape just above the panel & fingering smooth. A bit tricky but nice results & now one panel's 99% waterproof. So far it's holding up nicely - I'll see how it looks in the spring & maybe do the rest but I think it's prob. overkill to waterproof it.
Keeping water out of the holes is prob. the most imp. thing.
