IMHO correct torquing is the issue, provided bolts are not damaged and are the correct configuration (not always true!).
The bolts (or nuts on earlier vehicles) need to be torqued in at least two stages....light or 20ft lbs just to get the wheel on the axle. If you torque to spec right away on the first bolt, even if the wheel is perfectly on the hubcentric ridge, the wheel will cock up on on the opposite side of the bolt you're torquing...then when you tighten to spec the bolt 72 degrees out from the first one (five bolt circle, skipping a bolt) THAT bolt pulls down the cocked wheel and presto, you have 200-300% preload on the first bolt which translates to mongo torque on that first bolt.
Re Torquestix....they don't. There has been lots of testing done and AFAIK the only reliable means of accurately measuring fastener preload is to use a load washer (impractical for wheel studs/bolts). OTOH, 35-35% repeatable accuracy is probably fine for automotive use...use torque wrench, preferably the click/release or micrometer variety.
Just my $.02, YMMV.
