This may or may not help but check it out anyway.
I had intermittant starting problems on an '88 900 I had. Turn key one day, starts up, turn key different day, nothing. I had the alternator gone through, replaced starter, new battery. Turned out to be a bad positive cable. Over a year and half with no problems until I sold it.
Now on my '91 9kt when I did heater core/blower motor/hoses job, while I was poking around looking for trouble spots, I noticed the positive cable from battery to starter had a spot about 3 inches long where the insulation was dried and cracked off. The wire was getting corroded and untwisted. Once I replaced that $5 part, my voltage jumped from 13.4-13.6 to 14.0-14.2 while running. The speed in which the engine cranked was definately noticeable.
If this hasn't been replaced you might want to consider it.
Good luck!
