Below is a link to what I found out about the DI control through my own troubleshooting.
The knock sensor uses a shielded cable, so it's possible that a shielding fault could cause erratic operation due to electrical noise.
I'm think the sensor is magnetic, not opto; but I'm not sure about that. The manual is no help.
