There are things you have to look out for, though. If it was hit hard
in the front and the driver had his hand on the shifter, could be trouble.
However, the last 5 speed I bought was a '97 with only 4k miles on it.
I bought it from ABC/Greenleaf, which is now FoMoCo, for $1000. That's
sort of unusual in that the mileage was so low. However, I've found that
$1k is about what most yards get for a 5 speed, here in MA. Some of the
smaller yards are even cheaper, but they're less apt to have later models
as the larger yards must outbid them at the insurance auctions.....
I always ask to see the car it came out of - if it's a rear-end or side hit, or even a high-above-the-bumper front hit, I don't worry about it. Often times ones I love to get my hand on because there's no need for a frame machine.
