Same symptoms my '94CSE had when the motor was shot. It was a bear to replace - I can't imagine doing it on the "harder" pre-'94 cars... Fortunately for me it failed in mid-September when the weather was nice and warm - no such luck for you.

You really should trouble shoot it though, mainly checking for loose/corroded connections. Pull the cover off the aquarium, pull the false bulkhead and all the connections are reasonably accessible and obvious. Here's a test for the fan motor being worn out - if you have everything apart and the fan won't run give the motor a firm whack by hand or lightly with a hammer (don't want to break the housing). If the motor starts to run it's probably a bad motor. You can also short it directly to 12V but this wasn't a definitive test on my car - it ran hooked up like that but was toast - the brushes were fried.

I'd get a heater core to put in while you're there, 'cause if it leaks you do not want to have to pull it all apart again. Cores are relatively cheap, especially if you order it with the blower motor (I like eeuroparts.com - site sponsor, cheapest prices and free shipping, but I suspect you're in Canada so that may not help you).
