I posted on the board about a week ago about having to give my car time to warm up before turning the key. I think I may now know why I was having starting problems.
I bought new cables last weekend and didn't get around to an install until today. The guy at Napa sold me the wrong cables - but that's no sweat as I will need to buy another cable as well. I replaced the starter this fall and didn't think to use any locktite on the nut that's holds the (+) supply cable - this incidenally is where the alternator (+) supply attaches as well.
Well in the three months since I've swapped that part out the nut loosened a little bit and the Alternator supply cable bounced around. Those of you who understand wiring diagrams know what happened next... I'll bet that the cable would sometimes rest on the back of the engine block and short out(as the engine is ground). The loose end of that cable now looks like it sat in the microwave on HIGH for 5 minutes.
So does anyone know what gauge the alternator supply cable is? I don't have to replace it tomorrow but I'm guessing that replacing that and the other supply cables from the battery will clear up my electrical problems.
Oh one other question. It sometimes seems like the + and - supply cables are unsymmertic. I think that the the ground connection for the starter and alternator is simply the engine block, but what about the electrical appliances in the cabin? It seems like the return (-) cable is much smaller than the supply cable to the distribution block, but maybe I just don't understand the system well enough yet.
