Intense engine vibration on Warm Startup: 1995 2.3 LPT

SUMMARY (based on my limited 4,000 miles of ownership data):
Problem is intermittent!
In total about one out of 20 times on warm startup engine misfires, will not idle, vibration and shaking is powerful. Feels something like car is running on 3 cylinders. If engine stalls during vibration episode smell of fuel is evident. Playing with throttle usually keeps car running, and driving off cures the problem entirely within about 3-5 minutes.
Engine runs perfectly on cold starts 100% of the time, starts promptly and smoothly on first turn of key every single time when engine is cold.
HISTORY:
vehicle: 1995 9000 CS 2.3 LPT, 5spd. trans. (in service date: August 1995)
I have owned the car 2 months: current odometer = 40,000
Overall, car seems barely broken in, previous owner used car only one or two days per week.
Other than warm startup problem engine accelerates and runs perfectly through all five gears: zero-115mph not a problem. No hesitation or eratic performance problems on rapid acceleration/decelleration or at anytime other than on warm start up.
POSSIBLE CLUE?:
Problem has only occured when starting engine 15-60 minutes after having turned off engine warm. Meaning: NONE of the ~10 misfiring episodes have occured when restarting the car less than 10 minutes after having turned warm engine off....only when car has sat for 15 minutes or more has the problem been experienced.
I'm baffled. Have changed plugs & fuel/air filters, did not solve problem.
Many thanks for any thoughts/theories/experiences.
