The 92 9000 NA we did the chain thing on at 70K, had wear on the unhardened balance shaft sprocket and no obvious wear on anything else including the chains. It is somewhat surprising the large diameter drive sprocket would wear due to the number of teeth and lower stress from the large diameter. This sprocket is made of powdered metal and must have come out on the soft side. High revs do cause much higher stress on the chain drives, something in the order of the square of the speed. One reason we went into the chain drive was to replace the cam chain since it was a split roller type which is inferior to the solid rollers.
