1. For about a week, car would start fine, but interior lights were dim or off. Once I backed out of driveway & began driving, the display panel lights would kick in and all would be fine.
2. Sure enough, after a week of dealing with the above problem, it wouldn’t start at all. Called AAA for a jump. The mechanic jumped the battery, but it stalled again within minutes. He suggested that it may be the alternator. Brought it to a garage and they replaced battery, but claimed that the alternator was gone, but that they couldn’t do the repair. Brought it to original place of purchase (not a Saab dealership, but small outfit that “specializes” in Saabs). They hooked it up to the computer and said the alternator was fine and all was well with new battery.
3. One week later, “check engine” light is on. Bring it back to place of purchase for another computer diagnosis and told nothing is wrong. Mechanic re-set light.
4. NOW: engine light is back on. Called mechanic and he said, “Bring it in. I think it’s probably the cam shaft.” In addition, I’m back to having the dash lights dim when the car is started.
I was talking to a car enthusiast friend who seemed shocked that the mechanic would think it’s the cam shaft. Supposedly, this is a rare thing to go wrong with a car and very expensive to fix. Now I don’t trust the mechanic. Am I right to doubt him? Also, does anyone think that my alternator DOES need to be replaced? Why would I still be having dash light problems if it wasn’t? Any ideas on what is wrong with my car?
