push down on the socket/wrench to prevent slipage when you turn if the post hasn't been loosen before.
May also help if you spray some WD40 or liquid wrench at the nut/plate seam if hard to loosen. Just don't spray it all over or the socket/wrench may slip and round the nut when turn.
Also, mark the initial position of the plate with tape or grease pencil etc. may help in deciding how much the post/plate has moved.
Guess I make this simple process sound difficulty but nothing can beat Ari's m-i-l statement :-).
