I have been driving Saab's for 27 years, many with over 300k km and have not yet destroyes a "bearing". The cv-joint has 6 balls about 1 inch diameter so maybe that makes it a bearing. After a few years the grease gets frequently so hard that it does not flow any more, just as in the wheel bearing. I live in Northern Alberta, so I am familiar with cold weather. Jim wants to spend as little money as poosible at this time. At break of the bellows (rubber gaters) at the drive shaft is the least dangerous one since centrifugal forces do not throw out the grease. A split boot is split lengthwise. is either closed by little screws or glued together and can be installed without removing the axle. One doesn't need a new wheel nut and the repair takes about 1/2 hr. Obviously it is not the perfect solution but if you never had the experience you don't know how it feels to repair a cor in 20 below weather.
