First of all: Infinite thanks to the Saabnet and everyone at the Saabnet B.B. for all of your help and support! I couldn't have done it without you (and the Haynes manual)!
I'm proud of myself. Many thought I was crazy to try, and they were right, but I did it anyway!!! My friend Roman and I spent probably 30 hours over the last three weekends on this debacle. Finally, after two months, my car is back on the road!
I replaced these items:
Timing chain,
Timing chain tensioner,
T.C. left + right guide rails,
Balance chain,
B.C. tensioner,
B.C. upper + side guide rails,
B.C. crankshaft gear.
All gaskets (head, intake, exhaust, valve cover).
Crankshaft pulley/oil pump seal,
Thermostat.
Total cost from eeuroparts - about $400.
Also new:
4 new exhaust valves,
Valve stem seals.
I took the head to a machine shop to put in four new valves (one was broken, three others marginal). He machined all surfaces and valves + installed new valve stem seals. The head is now like new for $260.
I also had to replace the crankshaft position sensor and aperature disc on the back of the crank pulley/harmonic balancer (that the sensor reads from) because I forgot to tighten the screws that hold the sensor in place. I started the car and the inner screw under the pulley fell out and...well...the sensor was in pieces when I found it.
In the end I probably spent between $800-$900 and the car runs and drives great!
There are a few bugs to work out (very small pops/missing at idle/low rpms, oil leak from oil pump seal etc.) These are minor problems. I will inquire on the B.B. about these problems soon enough.
