I'm not sure what the car came with from the factory, but two sizes of alternator have indeed been 'stock' in the 9000 for quite a while. Even my '88 9000T lists two alternators - a 115 and an 80 amp. Now, my '88 has an 80 amp, and frankly, it's marginal for all the electrical geegaws, and my car doesn't have power seats.
My guess - and it's only a guess - come from the factory with different alternators depending on the optional equipment installed. A full-up car with power seats and rear door defrosters probably comes with a 115, but an otherwise base(er) model would come with an 80 amp unit.
Now -some interesting information. My alternator recently died, and I went looking for another. The local Saab dealer says that the 80 amp alternator lists for $300 (it is a dealer, after all). The 115 amp alternator lists for $1,300!. Yes, well over a grand. Even they were shocked, and you know what it takes to shock a dealer parts guy. They noted that they sell very few of those - at $1.3K, I can see why. Perhaps your dealer decided not to hit you with a whopping bill.
Now, that's dealer pricing. I priced rebuilt alternators. Sobstory will sell a 80 amper for $129, and 115 amp for $149. For the extra $20, I bought the 115 amp. I've seen other internet places advertising Saab alternators for about $80 for the 80 amp, $130 for the 115. But I know Sobstory uses Bosch units rebuilt by Bosch, so I spent a few extra bucks (and they are a BB sponsor).
So before you go nuts on the dealer, see if they have a policy of putting in the 80 amp unit to prevent cardiac arrest in their patrons - would you still want the 115 amp unit if the bill was $1,500 (labor included?). Yes, aftermarket rebuilt units are cheaper, but that's not how dealers usually work.
Good luck!
