is to pull off the valve cover and look at everything (that is, everything that an be seen with the cover off). Check the guide rail on the under side of the cover. See if the chain feels tight across the gap between the camshaft sprockets. Using a flashlight, look down the outside of the timing chain closest to the passenger compartment. You will see the left guide rail pushing forward against the chain. The tensioner applies pressure from behind the left guide rail. You can see if the little tensioner arm is extended a lot. If it is extended 2cm or more then the chain is probably stretched.
Unfortunately, you can't really inspect the lower guide rails for wear without removing the timing cover. This is a big pain in the a**.
Beyond that, just look at everything closely. Remember that your engine loves you and needs lots of emotional support and physical contact.
If you feel tempted to..say, pour a bucket of sand or small rocks into the engine while the cover is off, don't do it; I've heared that this can lead to reduced gas mileage and/or stalling. Try a bucket of mice or small kittens instead.
Sorry, I'm in a strange mood today...
Good Luck!
