Two measures Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 11 Feb 2002 09:36:46 In Reply to: 9000/900 is one safer?, Bill, Sun, 10 Feb 2002 23:49:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As BillR notes, the insurance payouts for the 9000 are lower than for the 900, making it a safer car. These are the medical/liability payouts, not the repair kind.
A bigger measure is death rates - the 9000 has continually had one of the lowest death rates of any car. Now, death rate has a lot in it - a car driven more conservatively will probably result in a lower death rate - one reason why the Corvette has a higher death rate than a Volvo. But given a large portion of the 9000 fleet have turbos, I think that inherent vehicle safety has a lot to do with it.

Where the 9000 has the 2nd best death rate - only the Volvo 240 is better.
For a comparison of the NG900 to the same year 9000, check out:

It shows the NG900 and 9000 have almost the same injury payout - close enough to be identical in my book.

The measure I would disregard are crash tests. I'm always suspicious of a test with a sample of one. The real-world, statistically-relevant measures mean more to me.
Saying that, I was in a major, high-speed accident in my OG900, and both my passenger and I opened the doors and walked away without a scratch or bruise. The car was totalled. I replaced it with a 9000. Do I think the 9000 is safer? Tough to say - I like the 9000 better.
Comparing the safety of the 900 to the 9000 is cutting a fine line. I would say that compared to most other cars on the road, you're talking no match. Beyond that, I put it down to personal preference. There just isn't a big enough difference between the two to say conclusively 'XX is safer." Other than to say, when I'm in my friend's Honda, I wish it were my Saab.
