Serious starter motor problem (long) Please Help!

My starter is causing me great stress ('91 9000T). Basically, it engages for two or three cranks then seems to disengage from the flywheel before the car starts.
The motor then spins freely until I release the key and then it makes a loud "CRUNCH!" (on its way back to rest) which shakes the whole car. Usually, after three or four tries, I can get it to crank the engine enough times to start the car.
I generally understand the principle of how a starter works. It seems that the gear that engages the flywheel catches initially, but then extends out too far so as to actually go beyond it to where it can spin freely. Why else would it "Crunch" AFTER I realese the starter? Perhaps a portion of the starter gear is worn away?
The starter ALWAYS engages initially and then, IF it lets go before the car starts, it ALWAYS "crunches" afterwards.
If the car does start, no problem, until the next time. Is there a reatining ring that could be broken? I really don't think the whole starter needs to be replaced.
Thanks in advance.
