Re: Galvanized steel . I remember a friends '75 (approx) brand new Plymouth Volare that had trouble with paint coming off the rocker panels . He was told that the problem was due to the rockers being galvanized and the enamel would not adhere properly . Having used galvanized sheet for body repairs on occassion I have been told that it is not a good idea to weld or braze galvanized steel as the zinc coating comes off as a toxic gas . Also if the galvanized coating is abraided the exposed iron or steel will rust which will then get under the remaining coating an lift it off !
Stainless steel is a better solution . It is almost completely impervious to salt but is difficult to work with (cut or drill) because it is so tough . The only car I know of with a stainless steel body/chassis was the DeLorean . A customized version was used in the movie "Back to the Future" . I think they had Renault engine/transmission and are probably collector's items .
Even fibreglass is affected by road salt . A buddy of mine had a used Lotus Elan that had badly deteriorating "glass fibre" on the "chin" area under the grill where the salt had done it's evil work .
Quest. if I may : How do you get your wife to was the car in the winter ? I cannot get mine to wash it even in the summer !!
