OBD II has two distinct diagnostic modes- the first is GENERIC codes. These are emission related codes mandated by the EPA. ALL OBD II (post 1996) vehicles have these GENERIC codes and they are ALL the same. ANY OBD II code reade can read GENERIC codes from ANY OBD II vehicle
The second mode is ADVANCED. These codes and protocols are unique to each manufacturer. You need an ADVANCED code reader for that specific vehicle to read ADVANCED codes.
So.... if your problem is EMISSIONS related you an probably get the code using ANY OBD II code reader. If the problem is ADVANCED - then you need a code reader specifically programmed to read ADVANCED codes on your vehicle.
I suggest yo tke it to a SAAB specialist andat least get him to read any stored codes and tell you what they mean
