I was working for a Hondas/VW store in the early eighties when people were paying $1000 over the sticker price and waiting in line 60 days to get Hondas. They were pretty, had valore interiors and lots of little gadgets. The VWs were pretty plain in comparison but when they came back at 100,000 miles the Hondas looked like shit and the VW's were like new. But selling durabiltiy over reliability is hard work--you really had to do a dog and pony show to sell a VW. Once they got it, they were sold on durabiltiy for life, but it wasn't easy. Out of twelve salepeople at the time, ten of us owned VWs, one a Honda and the other a Porche--which tells you we knew something the Honda buyers didn't.
