The old -12 freon is still available, it's just significantly more expensive than the new -134a.
Have a good AC shop check the system out and quote on it. The R-12 is expensive, but if all you need is more R-12 and a few parts, that can be cheaper than a R-134 conversion. The major advantage of the R-134 conversion isn't the first time you do it, but IF you have to service the system later on down the road, becasue the R-134 is so much cheaper. A lot depends on how long you plan on keeping the car.
