You can use about any filter with a 3/4-16 thread and a gasket that will mate with the surface, as long as the canister is small enough to fit the available space.
Some (but not all) of the filters that fit Nissans/Infinitis will work.
As a rule of thumb, the answer to your question is no.
Filter quality is not the same--in general, the better (and more expensive) filters will take out a higher percentage of solids (and smaller sizes) while having a greater capacity to hold dirt without affecting flow. If you are using cheap oil, and changing often, then it probably doesn't make much difference what quality of filter you use (unless you live in sandstorm area or up a long dusty road).
If you use a quality oil, capable of extended drain interval, use the best filter you can find.
